Filling, sanding, caulking, stain-blocking and priming are the parts nobody photographs, and they are the parts that decide whether a wall still looks flat and even under low winter light two years later. That preparation is where we spend our time.
Fanneran & Sons is a family-run London decorating business with more than 40 years of experience across period properties, new-builds and everything in between. We work on single rooms, whole-house redecorations and landlord turnarounds, and we treat all three the same way: protect the space properly, prepare thoroughly, and finish to a standard that stands up to close inspection.
We are equally comfortable cutting in against ornate Victorian cornice as we are spraying flush modern joinery. What stays constant is a clean site, clear communication about what happens next, and honest advice when a cheaper approach would serve you better.

Full surface preparation
Filling, sanding, caulking cracks and joints, stain-blocking water marks and nicotine, and priming bare or repaired surfaces so the topcoat has something sound to sit on.

Interior walls and ceilings
Emulsion in matt, soft sheen or scrubbable finishes, cut in neatly to cornice, coving and skirting with no ragged edges or roller stipple on the flat.

Woodwork and joinery
Doors, frames, skirting, architrave, staircases and built-in furniture in water-based or traditional oil-based systems, brushed or sprayed for a flat, brush-mark-free finish.

Radiators, pipework and metalwork
Correctly primed and finished so heat cycling does not yellow or lift the paint.

Render, masonry, soffits, fascias, windows and front doors, prepared and coated in systems chosen for London weather and pollution.

How long does it take to decorate a room?
A standard bedroom with walls, ceiling and woodwork is usually two to three days, depending on how much filling and repair the surfaces need. Rooms with heavy damage, high ceilings, ornate mouldings or dark-to-light colour changes take longer, and we will tell you that at the quote stage rather than discovering it halfway through.
Do you supply the paint or do I?
Either works. Most clients ask us to supply, because we buy trade and can advise on which products actually hold up. If you have already chosen specific colours from a particular brand, we are happy to work with what you have bought.
Will you move furniture and protect my floors?
Yes. We move and cover furniture, protect floors and carpets with proper dust sheets and boards rather than a thin plastic film, and mask what needs masking. Sites are tidied at the end of each day, not just at the end of the job.
Can you decorate while we are living in the house?
Almost always. We plan the order of work so you keep usable rooms throughout, and we use low-odour water-based systems wherever the finish allows it, which matters a great deal in a flat or with young children in the house.
Do you do exterior painting in winter?
We do, but selectively. Most masonry and woodwork coatings need surface temperatures above about 5°C and dry conditions to cure properly. If the weather will compromise the finish we will say so and schedule it rather than take your money for work that will fail.
