Wall Panelling & Finish Carpentry in London
Timber panelling, alcove joinery and fitted woodwork — measured to the room, not to a standard size.
Panelling is proportion. The same materials produce a room that looks elegant or a room that looks fussy depending entirely on where the rails sit, how the panels relate to the door and window heights, and whether the setting-out acknowledges that almost no London room is actually square.
We install traditional and contemporary panelling — Shaker, board and batten, slat, and full-height styles — along with alcove cupboards, floating shelving, window seats and other fitted joinery. Every layout is set out on the actual wall, allowing for the fact that floors slope, walls bow and ceilings are rarely level.
Because we decorate as well as build, the joinery arrives finished rather than merely installed. Joints are filled and sanded flush, caulk lines are neat, and the paint system is chosen to sit properly on MDF or timber without the grain raising or the joints ghosting through a few months later.

What material do you use for panelling?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted panelling, because it is stable, machines cleanly and gives a flawless painted finish. Where a stained or natural timber look is wanted, we use appropriate solid timber or veneered boards instead.
Can you panel over an uneven wall?
Yes. Battening out and packing lets us create a true, flat plane on a wall that bows, which is common in older London properties. It is one of the reasons panelling works so well in period rooms.
Will panelling make a small room feel smaller?
Handled well it usually does the opposite — half-height panelling with a lighter colour above tends to make a room read as taller. It is mostly about the height of the rail and the colour choice, and we will give you a straight opinion on your room.
Do you build alcove units off-site or in place?
In place, for the most part. London alcoves are rarely square or parallel, and building in situ means scribing to the actual walls rather than filling gaps with beading afterwards.
Can you match existing period mouldings?
In many cases, yes. If we can source or have a profile matched to your existing skirting, architrave or panel moulding, new work will read as original rather than obviously added.
