Skirting and architrave are the frame around everything else in a room. Get the profile and the height right and the room reads as considered; get them wrong — undersized skirting in a high-ceilinged Victorian room is the classic example — and something feels off even to people who cannot say why.
We supply and fit skirting boards, architraves, dado and picture rails across London properties, in both contemporary profiles and traditional patterns matched to what is already there. Internal corners are scribed rather than mitred, external mitres are cut tight and reinforced, and joints are filled and sanded so they do not open up as the timber moves through a heating season.
It is often the cheapest single change that lifts a whole room, particularly in a property where previous owners fitted 70mm boards into rooms that were designed for 170mm.

What height skirting should I use?
It depends on ceiling height and the age of the property. As a rough guide, higher ceilings carry taller skirting, and most Victorian and Edwardian London rooms suit something in the 145mm to 220mm range. We will look at the actual room rather than apply a rule.
Can you match my existing skirting?
Usually. Many common period profiles are still available, and where they are not, a matching profile can be machined. We will take a section and check before quoting.
MDF or solid timber?
MDF for painted work, in almost every case — it is stable, does not shrink or twist, has no knots to bleed through, and takes paint beautifully. Solid timber is the choice where a natural or stained finish is wanted.
Do I need to redecorate the whole room afterwards?
Not necessarily, but the wall above the skirting usually needs making good and touching in where the old board came off. We will tell you honestly whether a touch-up will be invisible or whether the wall is better repainted.
Can you fit skirting after a new floor is laid?
Yes, and it often gives the cleanest result — the skirting sits over the floor and covers the expansion gap without needing beading.
